You’re Next

Second Sight Films

Certificate 18

Home invasion movies are usually classed at the high end of exploitation genre. You’re Next gave this often-misused concept a real backbone for a story and littered it with a cast who knew exactly how to play it. What resulted was one of the most refreshing horror movies of the last fifteen years or so.

A family reunion takes an unexpected and gruesome turn when their home is invaded by masked killers. What the cold-blooded intruders don’t count on however is a guest that can turn just as violent they are.

Tense, funny, gory and inventive, You’re Next is one of those movies you can view time and time again. The smart, tight script unfolds steadily, the clues are all there whilst the set-pieces are lined-up perfectly. By keeping the movie mainly in one location adds to the claustrophobic fun and as the true story behind the invasion reveals itself you can’t help but cheer on the surviving characters.

The movie belongs to Sharni Vinson who brings to the genre one of the most calculated and realistic final girls. She’s the calming influence in an ever-increasing dangerous situation and is the glue holding the survivors together. Barbara Crampton makes a welcome return to the genre with her take of an overprotective, smothering mother whilst Joe Swanberg as the obnoxious son Drake is a gem of a character. There’s also a nice cameo from director Ti West as a documentary maker whose pretentious pieces make him a wonderful target, literally.

The transfer is deep and detailed and helps as this movie is either in the dark or with bright lighting. The colours are natural and smooth whilst the surround sound mix places you right in the middle whilst keeping the dialogue sharp and clear.

This being a Second Sight release you know its going to have a wealth of worthy extras which includes a new audio commentary with Director Adam Wingard and Writer Simon Barrett, another audio commentary with Adam Wingard, Simon Barrett, Sharni Vinson and Barbara Crampton, interviews with  Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, Producers Keith Calder and Jess Wu Calder, actors AJ Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Amy Seimetz, interview with Production Designer Tom Hammock, Tim Coleman on “You’re Next”, the making of You’re Next and animated storyboards.

Second Sight have given this movie the release it deserves, it’s packed with worthy extras, the presentation is gorgeous and allows you to once again appreciated the intelligent horror.
