Michael Turney's movie Video Vision has been described as "Queer Romance meets RetroTech Body Horror" so we thought we'd better chat to this creative at FrightFest 2024.
NYX: Can you recall the first movie you rented on VHS?
MT: Christine on Beta.
NYX: Where did the idea for Video Vision come from?
MT: My love of Videodrome and Max Headroom.
NYX: I love the natural relationships between Shelley Valfer (Rodney), Andrea Figliomeni (Kibby) and Chrystal Peterson (Gator), did they have much time to rehearse?
MT: Fortunately they did because we kept pushing the shoot dates.
NYX: Who designed the cool Dr. Analog logo?
MT: Me.
NYX: Where did you find all the old technology you see at the digitising facility?
MT: Analogique is a real repair shop in NYC and they had it all.
NYX: Though set in the present there’s a wonderful retro feel to the movie, was that deliberate?
MT: Definitely. I'm old so I love the past.
NYX: The effects are really cool, did you have much budget to play with?
MT: No but I tried to do small effects well instead of big effects badly.
NYX: Where did Gummipus come from?
MT: Originally I designed it for a t-shirt in a short film I never finished.
NYX: Will you be nervous when the movie has its International Premiere at FrightFest 2024?
MT: All I really wanted was to play Video Vision in a big genre festival so I'm super excited!
NYX: Are you a fan of old technology?
MT: I AM Dr. Analog!
NYX: Do you believe things/objects can become possessed or cursed?
MT: No but we definitely give them power.
NYX: So, what are you working on at the moment?
MT: Always writing that next script...
NYX: Michael Turney, thank you very much.
MT: Thank YOU!
